Hosting a Valheim server
Valheim servers default to 10 players and are quite efficient for a small group of Vikings, but they get heavier as your world does. Load grows with how much of the world has been explored and how much has been built, so a server that felt effortless on day one can slow down after weeks of building and exploring. The world is saved automatically, which is convenient but makes backups all the more important.
What to compare
- Sizing for a growing world. Start with a plan that suits your group, and pick a provider that lets you upgrade as the world and player count grow.
- Mod support. Most Valheim mods use BepInEx. If you plan to run mods, check that the host lets you install them and control which ones load, and remember every player usually needs the matching mods.
- Backups and restores. Long-running worlds are hard to replace, so choose a host with automatic backups and simple restores.
- Server settings. World name, password, modifiers and player limits are set in the server config, so look for a panel or file access that lets you change them.
- Crossplay. If you want Xbox and PC players together, check the host supports the setup you need.
- Updates. Valheim updates regularly, so a host that keeps the server in step with the game avoids locked-out players.
- Location. A nearby datacentre keeps combat and building smooth.
