Hosting an ASKA server
ASKA is a Viking survival and village-building game from Sand Sailor Studio, published by Thunderful. You lead a tribe, assign villagers to jobs, build a settlement and survive seasons and mythical creatures, alone or in co-op with up to 4 players. It has been in Early Access since June 2024.
Sand Sailor Studio ships a free dedicated server for Windows through SteamCMD, so the village stays available when the host is offline. Its settings live in a file called server properties.txt, with a space in the name. ASKA's own store page notes that performance demands grow as settlements grow, so a busy village with many villagers asks more of a server than the small player count suggests.
What to compare
- CPU for a growing village. Villagers working, hauling and defending are simulated by the server. Fast cores matter more than extra slots, since the player limit is only 4.
- Config file access. Server name, password, world and save options are set in
server properties.txt. Check you can edit it directly.
- Steam server token. The dedicated server needs a Steam game server login token to show in the in-game server list. A good host explains where to add it or handles it for you.
- Backups and restores. A village built over many seasons is hard to replace. Automatic backups help before Early Access updates.
- Fast updates. ASKA is still in active development and the server must match the client. Choose a host that updates the server promptly.
- Location. Combat and building feel better with low ping. Pick a datacentre close to your group.

How many players can join an ASKA server?
Up to 4. ASKA's co-op is built for one player plus three friends, and a dedicated server cannot raise that limit.
Why rent a server for only 4 players?
A dedicated server keeps your village available when the host is away, so friends can play at different times without waiting for one person to start the game.
Can I host an ASKA dedicated server for free?
Yes. The dedicated server is a free download through SteamCMD for Windows. It is only online while that machine is running, which is the main reason groups rent one.
Is ASKA still in Early Access?
Yes, as of October 2026 it is still in Early Access on Steam, so expect regular updates and back up your save before each one.
