Hosting a Heat server
Heat is a survival game set in 19th-century America from Code Hatch (styled Code}{atch), the studio behind Reign of Kings. Its multiplayer mode puts up to 40 players in a 67 km² world with 20 biomes, where you survive the wilderness, build a home, farm, tame livestock, raise a family and expand your territory, with roles such as President, Sheriff, Chief and Governor up for grabs. It entered Steam Early Access in January 2019 and fully released in June 2020, and it also has a single-player Homestead mode.
Heat supports private dedicated servers, which is what most community worlds use. A rented server keeps the frontier running between sessions, so farms, towns and politics carry on without one player having to leave their PC on. The world is large and full of systems, so this is a game where the hardware behind a plan matters.
What to compare
- CPU and memory for a big map. A 67 km² world with towns, livestock and seasons is a lot to simulate. Check the hardware behind each plan, not just the slot count.
- Fast storage. Large worlds take longer to save and load, and slow disks show up as lag during saves.
- Config file access. World rules, decay, resource rates and structure limits are set through the server's files. Full file access gives you the most control.
- Backups and restarts. Homesteads and towns take a long time to build. Scheduled backups and easy restarts protect them.
- DDoS protection. Heat has PvP, and public servers attract attacks, so treat protection as a baseline.
- Location. Mounted combat and gunfights are sensitive to ping. Pick a datacentre close to most of your players.

Heat server hosting FAQ
How many players can join a Heat server?
Multiplayer supports up to 40 players. Hosts sell plans by slot count, so pick one that matches your expected peak.
Is Heat out of Early Access?
Yes. It entered Early Access in January 2019 and fully released on Steam in June 2020.
Can I play Heat solo?
Yes. Homestead mode is a single-player farming mode with its own scenarios. Servers are only needed for the multiplayer world.
Can I host a Heat server for free?
Heat supports private dedicated servers that you can run yourself, though players report the setup can be fiddly and the server files are a large download. A self-hosted server is only online while that machine is on, so communities usually rent one.
