Hosting a Hurtworld server
Hurtworld is a hardcore multiplayer survival FPS from Bankroll Studios, built around competitive gunplay and map control. Players gather across several biomes, craft weapons, build defences and restore vehicles, and every base is a raid target. It spent about three years in Early Access before its full release in December 2019.
The dedicated server is free through SteamCMD, with builds for Windows and Linux. The player limit, server name and admins are set with server commands, and a creative mode can be switched on for building servers. Most community servers add plugins through Oxide (uMod) for kits, teleports, clan tools and admin features, so plugin access is often the deciding factor when choosing a host.
What to compare
- CPU for raids. Raids put every structure, explosion and player in one place at once. A host with weak or oversold CPUs shows up as lag at exactly that moment.
- Oxide (uMod) support. If you plan to run plugins, check the host installs Oxide for you and lets you upload and configure plugins yourself.
- Wipe control. Hurtworld servers wipe on whatever schedule the owner chooses. Look for easy scheduled wipes.
- Console and file access. Settings such as max players and admins are applied by command, so you want console access as well as files for plugin configs.
- Backups. Save the world before every wipe and update, so a mistake can be undone.
- DDoS protection. Public PvP servers attract attacks, so treat protection as a baseline.
- Location. Gunfights are decided by ping. Pick a datacentre close to most of your players.
