Hosting a Romestead server

Romestead is a co-op survival town-builder from Beartwigs, published by Three Friends, set in a fantasy version of fallen ancient Rome. You gather, fight, farm and build a settlement, recruit artisans and restore the Roman gods across a procedurally generated world with handcrafted dungeons and bosses. It launched in Steam Early Access on 25 May 2026 for 1 to 8 players, and the developers expect Early Access to last one to two years.

Groups can host from inside the game, but Romestead also has an official standalone dedicated server that is free, runs on Windows and Linux, and listens on UDP port 8050 by default. A dedicated server keeps your town available at all times, so players can log in to farm or build without waiting for the host. Difficulty scales with the number of players, so the world gets tougher as your group grows.

What to compare

  • Plans for small groups. Romestead is balanced for up to 8 players, so most groups need a modest plan. Compare RAM and CPU against your group size and how large your settlement will grow.
  • Backups. A town with recruited artisans and restored shrines takes many sessions. Automatic backups and simple restores protect it.
  • Updates. Early Access patches arrive often, and the server must match the client version. A host that updates the server quickly avoids locked-out players.
  • Password protection. Dedicated servers can require a password. Check you can set and change it yourself.
  • File access. Look for a file manager or FTP so you can manage saves and settings directly.
  • Location. Combat and dungeon runs are smoother with a datacentre near your group.

Romestead server hosting FAQ

How many players can join a Romestead server?

Romestead supports 1 to 8 players in co-op, and difficulty scales to the size of the group.

Is Romestead on console?

Not at the moment. It is a PC game on Steam, so there is no crossplay to plan for.

What port does a Romestead dedicated server use?

UDP 8050 by default. Hosted servers set this up for you.

Is Romestead still in Early Access?

Yes. It launched in Early Access in May 2026, and the developers plan more biomes and bosses before the full release.

Can I host a Romestead server for free?

Yes. The dedicated server tool is free and runs on Windows or Linux, or you can host from inside the game. Either way the world is only online while that machine is on, so groups who play at different times usually rent one.
