Sons of the Forest is Endnight Games' co-op survival horror sequel to The Forest, set on an island full of cannibals and mutants. It left Early Access in February 2024 and plays solo or in co-op. The Forest is a separate game with its own server, so make sure you rent the right one.

Endnight provides a free dedicated server tool through SteamCMD, and a hosted SOTF server keeps the island running when the person who started it logs off. Every setting lives in one JSON file, dedicatedserver.cfg, and the game caps a server at 8 players, so a rented plan only needs to suit a small group.

What to compare

Right-sized plans. With an 8-player ceiling there is no point paying for big slot counts. Compare RAM and CPU for the group you actually have.
Config file access. Game mode, difficulty, password, save slot and save interval are all set in dedicatedserver.cfg. Check you can edit it directly or through a panel that exposes every option.
Save management. A long build is hard to replace. Look for automatic backups, easy restores, and the ability to upload a save you started elsewhere.
Updates. The server must match the client version. A host that updates the dedicated server promptly avoids "version mismatch" errors after a patch.
Mod handling. There is no official mod support. Community mod loaders exist, so if your group uses them, check the host allows the files and keeps backups before updates.
Location. Combat with mutants and cannibals feels poor with high ping. Choose a datacentre close to most of your group.
