Hosting a Subsistence server
Subsistence is a first-person open-world survival game from ColdGames. You build a base with its own power systems, hunt, farm and mine through changing seasons, and defend yourself from wildlife, the weather and AI hunters who build their own bases and raid yours. It has been in Steam Early Access since October 2016, with solo, co-op PvE and online PvP play.
Dedicated server support arrived in the Alpha 54 update, which is what makes a rented Subsistence world possible. A hosted server keeps the world online while the host player is away, so the group can drop in at different times without waiting for the host player.
What to compare
- CPU and memory for the simulation. AI hunters build bases of their own and raid players, and every powered base adds to the load. Compare the hardware behind a plan, not just its slot count.
- Config access. Look for a host that gives you file access to the server settings, so you can choose PvE or PvP and adjust the world.
- Backups. Powered bases, farms and refineries take many sessions to build. Automatic backups protect them from crashes and from updates that change the save.
- Updates. Subsistence is still in Early Access and patches arrive as alpha builds. A host that updates promptly keeps the server matching the client.
- Admin tools. Admin commands on Subsistence servers are limited compared with some survival games, so check what the host's panel adds for kicking, banning and restarts.
- Location. Pick a datacentre near your group so shooting and building stay responsive.

Subsistence server hosting FAQ
How many players can join a Subsistence server?
Hosts sell Subsistence servers by slot count, and the player limit is set in the server settings. Most groups are small co-op teams, so size the plan for your peak group rather than the maximum.
Can I run a PvP Subsistence server?
Yes. Subsistence has online PvP as well as co-op PvE, so you can set the server up either way.
Is Subsistence still in Early Access?
Yes. It has been in Early Access since October 2016 and is updated through numbered alpha builds, so expect server updates alongside game patches.
Can I host a Subsistence server for free?
Yes, if you run it yourself. The dedicated server files are free for owners of the game. It is only online while that machine is on, so groups who play at different times usually rent one.
