Hosting a Windrose server
Windrose supports online co-op for up to 8 players, and its dedicated server is a separate free download through SteamCMD. The big reason to use one is the same as for most co-op survival games: the world stays online when the host logs off, so friends on different schedules can join whenever they like, build, and sail without waiting for one person to start a session.
Note that the server is a Windows build, with no native Linux or headless version, so it is worth confirming how your provider runs it.
What to check
- RAM headroom. Windrose recommends at least 16 GB of RAM for a dedicated server, and community advice is for more if you want it to run well with four or more players. Compare plans against that, not against a generic small-server spec.
- Windows support. Ask how the provider runs the server and whether they keep it updated in step with the game.
- SSD storage. Fast storage helps loading and overall smoothness.
- Backups. Ships, bases and progress are worth protecting, so automatic backups and simple restores matter.
- Settings access. You will want control over world settings, passwords and player limits without raising a ticket.
- Location. Choose a datacentre close to most of your crew to keep sailing and combat responsive.
