Hosting an OpenTTD server

OpenTTD is an open source business simulation based on Chris Sawyer's 1995 Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Players earn money by moving passengers and cargo by road, rail, water and air, building networks of hundreds of vehicles as towns grow and industries rise and fall. It has been on Steam since April 2021 and supports cross-platform multiplayer.

OpenTTD includes its own dedicated server mode, started with the -D option, which runs on Windows, Linux and macOS. Community mods, including real-world vehicles, industry sets and scenarios, come through an in-game content service.

What to compare

  • Uptime for long games. OpenTTD maps often run for weeks. A server that stays online lets each company keep growing while others are away.
  • File access. Check you can edit openttd.cfg and upload saves, scenarios and mods yourself.
  • Save backups. Automatic backups protect a network that took many sessions to build.
  • Price. The game is light on resources, so compare plans on price and location rather than paying for memory you will not use.
