Hosting a CS:GO server
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is Valve's team shooter, first released in 2012. Counter-Strike 2 replaced it on 27 September 2023, and Valve kept CS:GO as a frozen legacy build that players can switch to through the csgo_legacy beta branch in Counter-Strike 2's Steam properties.
Valve says the legacy build keeps every CS:GO feature except official matchmaking. Support ended on 1 January 2024, and features that rely on Valve's Game Coordinator, such as inventory access, may stop working. Without official matchmaking, online play runs on community servers.
What to compare
- Legacy build support. Confirm the host runs the CS:GO legacy branch and not Counter-Strike 2.
- Plugin support. Most community servers rely on server-side plugins, so check you get file access to install and update them.
- Slots and performance. Compare slot counts and CPU, as busy competitive or modded servers need steady performance.
- Location. Low ping matters in a fast shooter, so pick a datacentre near your players.
