Hosting a Garry's Mod server
Garry's Mod is really a platform for community game modes, and most servers are defined by what they run: DarkRP, Trouble in Terrorist Town, Prop Hunt, Sandbox and many more. The game runs on the Source engine, which leans heavily on single-thread performance, so a fast CPU helps more than a large core count.
What to compare
- Single-core speed. GMod servers depend on strong per-core performance, especially with heavy game modes and many addons.
- Workshop addons and collections. Most servers load addons from a Steam Workshop collection. Check the host lets you set a collection and manage individual addons.
- FastDL and content delivery. Custom maps and content can be slow to download for new players. Look for hosts that support FastDL or an equivalent so players join quickly.
- File and config access. Game modes are customised through Lua files and config, so direct access or a capable panel is important.
- Game mode support. Check the host can run the game mode you want. DarkRP servers in particular often need a database.
- RAM and storage. Large addon lists and maps need more memory and disk space, so compare plans against your setup.
- DDoS protection and location. Public servers attract attacks, and latency matters for shooting-based modes.

Garry's Mod server hosting FAQ
Why does CPU speed matter so much?
The Source engine relies heavily on a single fast core, so it makes a bigger difference than extra cores.
Can I run DarkRP or TTT?
Yes, on hosts that let you install game modes and addons. Check the host supports what your game mode needs, such as a database for DarkRP.
What is FastDL?
It is a way to serve custom maps and content to players faster than the default in-game download, which helps new players join quickly.
