Hosting a RedM server
RedM is the Cfx.re multiplayer framework for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, built by the same team behind FiveM. Rockstar Games acquired Cfx.re in 2023, so RedM is now an officially backed way to run your own Wild West server. Most RedM servers are roleplay communities, and players need their own PC copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 to join.
A RedM server runs the same Cfx.re server software as FiveM, set to the rdr3 game. Like FiveM, you build the server from resources: a roleplay framework such as VORP or RSG, then scripts for jobs, horses, stores and housing. How well the server runs depends as much on that resource list as on the plan you rent.
What to compare
- Cfx.re license key and slots. Every RedM server needs a free license key from the Cfx.re portal. Larger servers need OneSync enabled, and the highest player counts depend on Cfx.re's Element Club subscription tiers, so check what your target population requires on top of hosting.
- txAdmin support. txAdmin handles setup, restarts, player management and monitoring, and most RedM owners use it. Check the host offers it.
- Database. VORP, RSG and most other frameworks store characters, inventories and money in a MySQL or MariaDB database. Confirm one is included and compatible.
- File access. Resources go into the server's files and server.cfg, so you want full file access and easy uploads.
- Per-core CPU and RAM. Busy roleplay servers with many scripts lean on single-thread speed and memory.
- Backups. Look for automatic backups of files and database together.
- DDoS protection and location. Public roleplay servers attract attacks, and a datacentre near your players keeps horseback chases and shootouts smooth.

RedM server hosting FAQ
Do players need Red Dead Redemption 2 to join?
Yes. Each player needs a legitimate PC copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the RedM client.
How many players can a RedM server hold?
Up to 32 players works without extra setup. Above that you need OneSync, and the largest servers need a paid Element Club tier from Cfx.re.
Which framework should I use?
VORP and RSG are the most common open-source roleplay frameworks. Both need a database, so pick a host that provides one.
Can I host a RedM server for free?
Yes. The Cfx.re server software and license key are free, so you can run a server on your own Windows or Linux machine. It is only online while that machine is, so communities usually rent one.
